The redemption system (another form of indentured labor) brought thousands of Germans to America in the early 1800's.
The trickle of German migrants turned into a flood when the German Revolution of 1848 erupted bringing hunger riots and violence in its wake. Poor harvests and extreme deprivation drove over one million people in Germany to flee to America.

With the advent of the First Industrial Revolution the nation was crying out for cheap labor. European countries had made moving to America easier, because new farming inventions and improvements had created surplus labor.  Old European laws that had forced peasants to stay in their villages and had banned skilled workers from leaving the country had been repealed and immigrants were allowed to take their savings with them when they left the country.
